"Dora the Explorer" is the world's most beloved preschooler. Dora's adventures with her best friend, a monkey named Boots, take her all around the world. With singing, dancing, and interactive play, Dora engages children to use their imagination and helps them learn.

Valerie Walsh, the co-creator, writer, and executive producer of
"Dora the Explorer," provided us with a behind-the-scenes look at how "Dora the Explorer" works.

At a December 1997 meeting, Nickelodeon executives asked the network's in-house development team to come up with ideas for new shows. The execs had been working with outside creators to conceptualize shows, but were not satisfied with the results.

Walsh, a Nickelodeon employee who was in film school at the time, was at the meeting. Walsh brought her ideas to the group's next meeting and found that she and another Nickelodeon employee, Chris Gifford, had a similar concept: a story-driven interactive show starring a little girl heroine.

"I felt like I knew preschoolers and what was entertaining to them," Walsh said. "I loved the idea of trying to infuse teaching preschool-appropriate things with getting the kids up and making it an active learning experience for them."

Nickelodeon executives, intrigued with the concept, asked Walsh and Gifford to flesh out their ideas into a TV show. About four months later,
"Dora the Explorer" was born.

Walsh and Gifford considered other characters for their concepts before they decided on Dora. One version told the story of Dora the rabbit and her friends who lived in the woods. The creators preferred a little girl all along as the lead character, but initially were restricted by monetary considerations.

"We weren't allowed to consider doing an animated show because, at the time, Nick couldn't afford animation," Walsh said. "It would have been a live action show with people wearing animal suits. We called it 'The Knock Arounds.'"

While they were uncertain about the future of "The Knock Arounds," Walsh and Gifford really liked certain elements of the concept:
Once animation became an option for the show creators, the show started to look like "Dora the Explorer." Boots, who was originally a mouse, became a monkey; Dora turned from a rabbit into the strong little girl we know today.

"There are so many shows out there that have characters act in very stereotypical ways. We believed you should see someone on TV who knows that it's important to be smart and work well with others," Walsh said. "This is more important than the Barbie image. Chris had daughters and preschoolers at the time and agreed that there was a lack of female role models."

At that stage of development, writer Eric Weiner joined the project, and the production process began. After six months, the group was ready to make a pilot. Designer Helena Giertz and her husband developed the look of the characters, and the Dora creators were overwhelmed with the results. "The minute Helena put her stuff down in front of us, we knew," Walsh said. "Her sensibility was very much in the preschool world. There's something so loveable about her characters. Dora's still the cutest kid I've ever seen."

Giertz worked on the storyboards, which are a series of illustrations displayed in sequence for the purpose of previsualizing the show.. Nickelodeon's talent department put out a casting call to New York agencies for bilingual girls ages five to seven. After listening to the voices of ten or fifteen girls, the team met Kathleen Herles, who became the voice of Dora.

By December 1998, a pilot, or prototype, of the show was ready. Nickelodeon tested the show with preschoolers, and the results were highly favorable. Within four months, Dora the Explorer was scheduled to air.

"Dora the Explorer" airs on Nick Jr., Noggin, and CBS. All episodes are created for Nick Jr. on the Nickelodeon channel. Noggin and CBS run episodes that have been retired from the thrice-daily schedule on Nickelodeon.

Now that you know how
"Dora the Explorer" came to be, we'll examine what goes into creating an episode. This is covered in the next section.

Kim Chiu on Star Magic Ball 2011

Though without any date in the recent Star Magic Ball, Kim Chiu showed her gorgeous look as she won the 'Drop Dead Stunner' award. Kim wore a flowy, sophisticated white gown by Francis Libiran.

Here are some of the pictures of Kim Chiu in the Star Magic Ball.

Kristine Hermosa and Oyo Boy Sotto Both Want a Baby Girl

Kristine Hermosa and Oyo Sotto were among the last guests to arrive at the Star Magic ball at the Manila Peninsula Hotel last September 3. Although she’s already five months pregnant, Kristine still looked beautiful and sexy with her baby bump barely showing. “Wala ka naman magagawa kapag buntis ka eh. Sa bahay lang then I go to the gym. Now that I don’t have any work commitments, I have all the time in the world to do what I feel like doing. Masarap yung feeling. Siyempre very thankul naman kami kay God. Alam naman natin na answered prayer din talaga.”

Oyo further shared that he could hardly believe the good news the first time he learned that Kristine was pregnant, three months after their unforgettable beach wedding in Batangas. “Yung first few months hindi ako makapaniwala eh. Kahit ngayon kapag tinititignan ko [yung tiyan niya] parang medyo maliit pa. Siguro kapag nagpaultrasound na si Tin at malaman na talaga namin yung gender nung baby, mas mapi-feel ko na. Actually, pinagpre-pray namin na sana girl. Wala pa kaming pangalan na naisip kasi gusto muna namin siguraduhin na girl talaga bago kami mag-decide.”

When asked if he’s ready to be a father, Oyo said that he makes sure that he spends quality time with Tin and their baby as early as now. “Sa akin kasi you’re never ready until you’re there. Hanggang sa wala pa, hindi mo talaga masasasabi. Halu-halo yung emotions ko—happy, kinakabahan at takot. But as much as possible I read stories to the baby kasi sabi nila maganda daw yun. Tsaka pinapakinig ko ng classical songs so every night may music ‘yan. Pero kapag may work ako, minsan lang.”

Kristine related that she’s very happy with the love and support that Oyo has been giving her, especially now that she’s with child. “Napakamaalaga naman nito kahit hindi ako buntis. Kung meron mang nagbago sa relationship namin, siyempre mas naging intimate kami sa isa’t isa. Tapos mas klarong-klaro na husband and wife na kami talaga. Si Oyo nawi-weirduhan lang siya everytime na kinakausap niya yung baby, pero ginagawa pa rin niya.”

But even though family life would be her main priority, Kristine explained that she wouldn’t totally give up her showbiz career even after the baby’s born. “Siyemre kailangan ko naman tutukan yung baby for a while. Pero once in a while pwede naman ako mag-TV guesting or kapag may show na madadaan sa schedule. Huwag lang siguro yung full-length soap kasi parang one week kaming walang tulugan dun. Siyempre nami-miss ko naman ang pagarte kasi for how many years yun ang ginagawa ko.”

As it is, Oyo has no objection to Kristine going back to work in due time. “Oo naman. Wala naman yun problema sa akin. Alam ko naman na nalulungkot siya sa bahay. I know how much she loves acting and working so ayoko tanggalin yun sa kanya. She knows her limitations and I totally trust her.”

Pokwang Breaks Down as She Talks About ‘A Mother’s Story’

Pokwang expressed her overflowing gratitude for being given a launching movie, A Mother’s Story, scheduled for release on October 12. She told reporters during the photo shoot for the film, “Mataas pa sa bubong ng ABS-CBN building ang kasiyahan ko. Finally ay nabigyan ako ng pagkakataong magkaroon ng launching movie. Maraming salamat sa Star Cinema at sa TFC. Totoo nga ang kasabihan na maghintay lang dahil may nakalaang bonggang-bongga para sa iyo.”

But the difference in this movie is that the comedienne will deliver a dramatic performance. Pokwang will play an illegal immigrant desperately working to provide for her children. “Ako rito si Medi, isang ina na gagawin ang lahat para sa kanyang mga anak. Nag-TNT (tago nang tago) siya sa Amerika para maghanap ng trabaho. Dahil iligal nga ang stay ko, hindi ako makalaban sa mga amo kong umaapi sa akin nang bonggang-bongga. Pero tiniis ko lahat ‘yun.”

Pokwang shared that her character is very much similar to her real life experience before she entered showbiz. Prior to being a stand-up comic, she worked as an entertainer in Japan and in Abu Dhabi. “Sobrang laki ng naitulong nung karanasan ko bilang OFW noon para sa character ko rito sa movie. Alam ko na kung ano ang pakiramdam ng isang ina na malayo sa anak dahil nagtatrabaho abroad. Kaya kami ni Direk John D Lazatin, titigan na lang ang motivation niya sa akin kasi nga sasabihin lang niya, ‘Alam mo na!’ Alam niyang hindi nalalayo si Marietta Subong (her real name) kay Medi.”

She confessed that there were times on the set that she would feel very much affected even before the take. “Kaya ibinuhos ko na lahat ng kaya ko. Ayaw daw niya na umarte ako na parang artista. Gusto kong ipakita mo sa tao ‘yung sakit na naramdaman mo nung nag-OFW ka at nalayo ka sa anak mo, na wala ako sa tabi niya habang may sakit siya hanggang sa kunin na siya ni Lord. Ang laki nang naitulong nung experience ko.” Pokwang then started to cry while doing the interview as she remembered her six-year-old son who passed away while she was working in Abu Dhabi.

After having gone through those painful experiences, Pokwang related how very thankful she is now being blessed with a successful showbiz career. “Ngayon natutunan ko na ‘yung mga nangyayari sa buhay natin na masasakit, balang araw may matututunan tayong aral dun. Hindi na siguro mawawala ‘yung sakit, pero ginagamit ko na lang na tuntungan para maabot ko pa ‘yung iba ko pang mga pangarap. Ito na siguro ‘yung kapalit ng lahat ng sakit na naranasan ko sa buhay. May sunrise rin pala.”

Playing her children in the movie are Rayver Cruz and Xyriel Manabat. “Anak ko dito sina Rayver at Xyriel. Nung maliit pa si Rayver ang gaganap sa kanya si Aaron Junatas. Hindi naman talaga sila magrerebelde. Sa movie kasi ni Ate Vi (Vilma Santos) na Anak, si Claudine (Barretto) doon talagang nagrebelde. Sina Rayver at Xyriel, dahil nga matagal akong nawala, lalayo ang loob nila sa akin.”

Kim Chiu Talks About Her ‘My Binondo Girl’ Leading Men

As the lead star in the hottest new Kapamilya primetime series My Binondo Girl, Kim Chiu admitted she is happy with the way her career is going at the moment. Aside from that, she also admitted she does not mind being paired up with three new leading men Jolo Revilla, Xian Lim and Matteo Guidicelli in the show. Kim said she has no problem being paired up with newcomers in future projects. “Bakit naman hindi? Artista rin naman sila and nasa larangan din naman siya ng pag-arte, bakit naman hindi,” she said.

Out of all her My Binondo Girl leading men, Kim revealed that she is closest to fellow Star Magic artist Matteo Guidicelli. “Lumalabas-labas kami nila Matteo and magkakilala na naman kami dati. Lagi kaming lumalabas labas kapag wala kaming work. Magkakabarkada kami. Magkasama kami siyempre nila Maja (Salvador) and Matteo, lokohan, biruan, chikahan, ganun,” she shared.

Kim admitted that because they speak the same dialect, it was easy for her to relate to the Fil-Italian heartthrob. “Bisaya siya and sobrang funny niya. Madaldal and kahit ‘di mo siya kibuin magsasalita siya, yun yung okay sa kanya kasi siya yung nagpapagising pagka-madaling araw. Bisaya kasi kami kaya parang lagi siyang nagtatanong sa akin ng, ‘Okay ba yung ayos ko? Okay na ba itong makeup ko?’ mga ganyan pero in Bisaya. Sinasabi ko okay naman. Basta may biruan kami. Magaan rin ang loob ko sa kanya kasi parang ang tagal na naming nagkakasama and matagal na rin kaming magkakilala,” she said. But Kim shared that she and Matteo have yet to ask each other for any advice regarding their personal lives. “Hindi, wala. Katuwaan lang yung sa amin ni Matteo. Walang mga love advice. Biruan lang talaga.”

The 21-year-old actress also had a lot of good things to say about her other co-stars Xian and Jolo. “Actually hindi ko narraamdaman yung ilangan factor namin sa set. Parang matagal ko na rin silang kasama and kakilala kasi hindi na rin sila nahihiya eh. Parang buddy buddy. Sabi nga ni Jolo, one of the boys ako kasi nakikisali ako sa mga kuwentahin nila at chikahan nila kahit na mga panlalaki pinagkukuwentuhan nila. So masaya kami sa set.

Kim admitted that she has been enjoying downtime on the set with Xian.

Sexy Kapamilya Stars Strut Their Stuff at the Star Magic Ball 2011

In a star-studded event such as the prestigious Star Magic Ball, it’s understandable to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of celebrities walking down the red carpet. Even celebrities like Star Power champ Angeline Quinto admitted to being star-struck by seeing so many stars dolled up for the night.

With a reported 200 Kapamilya celebs in attendance, this year’s bash was another lavish event held this time at the Manila Peninsula hotel. Although most of the female stars chose to go with formal gowns chosen by their favorite designers and stylists, these fearless femme fatales chose to wear their dresses in an unconventional way.

Megan Young and Jessy Mendiola’s gowns looked conservative in front, but showed off their flawless backs in a sexy, subtle way. Bangs Garcia and Ina Feleo looked stunning in their peek-a-boo dress that highlighted some of their assets. Accessories were kept at a minimum so as not to distract from their clothes. This guarantees maximum impact at the red carpet, which means even with or without an escort, these ladies can shine all on their own. Also seen wearing dresses with sexy silhouettes were Kristel Moreno and Forever and a Day director Cathy Garcia-Molina.

Melissa Ricks Not Yet Ready to Work with Jake Cuenca

Five months after their much-publicized breakup, actress Melissa Ricks said she has already moved on from her past relationship with actor Jake Cuenca.

Speaking to Push.com.ph during the ABS-CBN Trade Launch last September 1, Ricks said she is not the type of person who holds grudges against someone.

“Hindi ako ‘yung taong parang I would talk bad about someone. Hindi ako ‘yung ganoong tao pero ang sa akin lang ‘yung respetong ibinibigay ko sa ‘yo ibigay mo rin sa akin,” she said.

Although she is open to being friends with Cuenca again, Ricks stressed it is not anymore up to her.

“It’s up to him naman, it’s not up to me. I’m fine with everybody. I have nothing against whoever he dates. If he wants to be happy it does not have to be with me. Malay mo hindi naman kami meant to be. Basta he’s happy and may respeto siya sa akin dahil may pinagsamahan naman kami ng dalawang taon,” she said.

Ricks, however, maintained she is not yet ready to work with Cuenca again.

“Right now, I don’t think that would be such a good idea, pero in the future, why not? We can never say pero right now, parang hindi siya magandang idea,” the actress explained.

According to Ricks, her past relationship with Cuenca taught her a lot of things. She said it even made her stronger.

“Alam mo ‘yung kaya kong pagdaanan ‘yan with my friends with me na hindi talaga ako iniiwan. Sobrang it helped me to be okay and it took me a long time rin to be okay pero I think I can say I’m better now,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ricks called on the public not to drag actress Lovi Poe’s name in the picture.

“I hope huwag naman nilang isali si Lovi dito. I’ve never met her pero people tell me she’s a nice girl, so huwag na lang natin siyang isali sa tsismis,” she said.

Poe was Cuenca’s date in the recently concluded Star Magic Ball.

Life Goes On for Maja Salvador After Coco Martin - Matteo Guidicelli Brawl

Life goes on for actress Maja Salvador after the controversial brawl between Coco Martin and Matteo Guidicelli.

Martin is Salvador's co-star in defunct ABS-CBN television series "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin." Guidicelli, on the other hand, is the actress' real-life boyfriend.

To show that everything is alright, Salvador appeared on "Showtime" to promote her film, "Thelma," and to be a guest judge.

The actress even joked when Ryan Bang, her co-judge on the show, stared at her.

"Gusto mo bang may sumapak sa iyo?" she told Bang.

"Ay kinakabahan ako pero hello, madlang people. Sa wakas, nakapag-guest ako rito bilang hurado. Pero ang hirap bilang si Vice Ganda ang pinalitan ko dito," she added, referring to the show's resident judge, actor-comedian Vice Ganda.

Salvador turned emotional on Sunday as she admitted that she was the reason why Guidicelli and Martin got into a brawl after the Star Magic Ball, which was held the previous day.

The actress also admitted for the first time that she and Guidicelli are in a relationship.

According to a source of ABS-CBN celebrity talk show "The Buzz," Guidicelli and Martin got into a fistfight after the latter allegedly kissed Salvador on the lips during the Star Magic Ball after party on Saturday night.

Salvador, however, denied that Martin kissed her.

The Star Magic management, in a statement, said that everything has already been patched up between the two actors.

On Monday, Guidicelli apologized for the incident, which he called "a very unnecessary matter."

Vice Ganda's US Concert Sold Out

Several Filipinos in San Francisco, California showed their unwavering support to comedian Vice Ganda, comedienne K Brosas and hunk actor Jon Avila as they attended their concert last week.

Tickets to the show dubbed "Comedy Knockout," held at Cache Creek casino resort last September 3, were sold out.

"This is the most attended na Filipino event dito ever. Sa lahat ng mga nag-concert, ito 'yung pinakajam-packed. Pinakamalaki ang attendance kaya nakakatuwa," Vice Ganda said.

Brosas started the show with her crazy antics, followed by Vice Ganda's hilarious stunts including his signature move, the "horse dance."

Instead of performing a romantic number with Vice Ganda, Avila did a solo performance and handed out red roses to female members of the audience.

The performers said they are thankful to have the opportunity to entertain Filipinos abroad.

"Privilege sa akin 'yon kasi konti lang naman ang nakakagawa dito sa aming mga performer. Isang gratification 'yung nagpapasaya ka ng mga taong homesick," Brosas said.

For his part, Vice Ganda said, "Talagang well-appreciated kami kaya ang sarap sa pakiramdam kahit pagod na pagod kami sa biyahe."

"Maraming maraming salamat po sa lahat ng Pilipinong patuloy na sumusuporta, nanonood at nakikihalakhak. Maraming maraming salamat po and 'til next time."

CA Dismisses Copyright Complaint Vs. Willie Revillame

The Court of Appeals (CA) has dismissed a copyright infringement case media giant ABS-CBN filed against former talent Willie Revillame, ABC Development Corporation and its president Ray Espinosa, and Wilproductions Inc. before a Makati City trial court in connection with "striking similarities" between Revillame's now-defunct show "Wowowee" with ABS-CBN and his subsequent game show "Willing Willie" with ABC.

In a 16-page decision by the Former First Division promulgated on September 5, 2011 and penned by Associate Justice Japar Dimaampao, the appellate court said "ABS-CBN is guilty of forum shopping having filed two cases based on the same cause of action" even as reliefs it prayed for were "divergent."

On August 10, 2010, then ABS-CBN talent Revillame, host of "Wowowee," filed a Complaint for Judicial Confirmation of Rescission of his Talent Agreement with ABS-CBN with the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 84 after "the harmonious relationship between Revillame and ABS-CBN turned sour prompting the host to leave his home studio."

The court noted that ABS-CBN, in opposing Revillame's complaint, asked the trial court to issue a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) or an injunctive writ to prohibit Revillame "from creating or performing work similar to the work under the Talent Agreement; engaging in activities which were adverse to the interests of ABS-CBN; and, appearing or permitting his name, voice or likeness to be used, directly or indirectly to promote any product or service in print, radio or television or any form of advertisements, in direct competition with ABS-CBN."

More than three months after Revillame filed his complaint before the QC RTC, ABS-CBN filed with the Makati City RTC Branch 66 the complaint for Infringement of Copyright Under Section 172.1 of the Intellectual Property Code against Revillame, et al., asking for damages and issuance injunctive relief to prevent the showing/airing of "Willing Willie."

ABS-CBN alleged that each segment of the defunct "Wowowee" was "reproduced" in "Willing Willie" namely: 1) introduction of the host by one "DJ Coki," 2) dance number of Revillame, 3) "Biga-ten" segment named as "Bigtime Ka," and 4) "Willie of Fortune" was repackaged as "Willtime Bigtime."

ABS-CBN also claimed that "the look and feel of the new show was strikingly similar to the previous one" from set design, stage, studio viewers' layout, sequencing, blocking, and camera angles.

Forum shopping

The appellate court ruled that the two actions by ABS-CBN before the two trial courts, constitute forum shopping on the part of the media network, the appellate court said.

"In the suit pending before the RTC-QC, it (ABS-CBN) implored to uphold its Talent Agreement with intervenor Revillame. Upon the other hand, private respondent prayed for the protection of its alleged copyright over the Wowowee show in the suit filed before the court a quo," the decision read.

"These reliefs may be different; nonetheless, they emanate from one cause of action -- the purportedly wrongful conduct of intervenor Revillame in refusing to honor his Talent Agreement.

"Forum shopping occurs although the actions seem to be different, when it can be seen that there is a splitting of a cause of action," the decision read.

In asking the appellate court to dismiss the Complaint for Infringement, ABC claimed that ABS-CBN "shrewdly and astutely instituted before different courts two suits predicated on the same or related cause of action which prayed for the same of substantially the same reliefs."

Not forum shopping

ABS-CBN, for its part, claimed that it was not guilty of forum shopping since the case before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court was for rescission of talent agreement while that before the Makati RTC, where ABC's principal place of business was as stated in its Articles of Incorporation and General Information Sheet, was for infringement.

The appellate court, however, was unconvinced, ruling that "where there is only one delict or wrong, there is but a single cause of action regardless of the number of rights that may have been violated belonging to one person."

"With the denial of its supplication for the issuance of a TRO to enjoin intervenor Revillame from rendering service with a rival network, private respondent (ABS-CBN) cavalierly instituted the Complaint for Infringement before the court a quo (Makati RTC)," the decision read.

"While its suit was for the protection of its purported copyright over Wowowee, a review of the aforesaid complaint evinces that private respondent persisted that intervenor Revillame violated its Talent Agreement by working for petitioner ABC.

"Without a doubt, in both suits, private respondent has the same cause, and what differs is the ground upon which the cause of action is predicated," the decision read.

The appellate court said that its earlier Writ of Preliminary Injunction issued on March 10, 2011 in favor of ABC is now declared "permanent" and the cash bond of P102,400,000 be released in favor of ABC.

"Lagi akong nanonood ng 'ASAP' sa TFC (The Filipino Channel) at hinihintay ko palagi ang portion ng Sessionistas," said Fan Totoy Valerio.

"Sobrang saya ng concert. Sana maulit ito. Sana marami pa silang dalhin na Kapamilya," added another fan, Jules Cantos.

The Sessionistas, Harrah's Management, and the rest of the concert's production team thanked those who attended the event, saying that all their efforts were worth it.

Meanwhile, the Sessionistas are set to fly to Alaska on Sunday for the last leg of their concert tour.
